Machina at Dølajazz 2011
Tucked into a cozy corner of Café Stift, I claimed a small table, eagerly awaiting a band I’d never heard before: Machina.
Their fearless fusion of genres—rock’s grit, jazz’s freedom, and a touch of avant-garde madness—creates a sound that’s as exhilarating as it is unpredictable. For fans of Motorpsycho’s sprawling psychedelia or Zappa’s irreverent complexity, Machina offers a fresh take on those influences while carving out their own niche. Their nod to free jazz pioneers like Coleman and Ayler adds a layer of depth that invites listeners to lean in and embrace the chaos.
Though my iPhone recording of Zapparet may be grainy, the memory of that night in Lillehammer remains crystal clear. Machina’s performance was a testament to the power of live music to transcend genres, ignite the senses, and leave you craving more.
